Product Description

A reproduction of a 19th-century photograph by Samuel Bourne (English, 1834–1912), originally captured around 1864–66.

This photograph presents a quiet riverside scene in Kashmir, where the first bridge guides the eye toward the low, continuous line of the Raja’s palace. The buildings rise plainly from the water’s edge—brick, mud, and timber arranged without ornament, their simplicity echoing the calm surface of the river below. In the foreground, a solitary figure sits near the bank, turned toward the water. His presence gives the scene a human scale, grounding the architecture in everyday life rather than ceremony. Further along the bridge, a few distant figures can be seen crossing, their movement subtle but enough to suggest a steady rhythm of passage between the two sides of the settlement.

Framed in yellow pine wood with an oil finish, handcrafted and assembled at our Lahore studio.
